Welcome to the Chun Family!
By Ally and Nikki
It's very hard to understand our family dynamic without first hand experience. Luckily for us, a picture is worth a thousand words.
In our immediate family there's our mom, dad, and us three sisters. (Yes 4 girls against 1 guy, our dad has his work cut out for him). Our parents met back when they were in seventh grade, after my mom moved to California from Canton, China. They had a mutual friend that eventually introduced them. And then it just gets more complicated from there.
Our dad's younger brother had been friends with our mom's cousins and brothers before our parents were even together. So I guess you could say our family is closer than most.
When our parents moved to the Bay Area, the rest of the family shortly followed. This meant we got to watch our younger cousins grow up. To this day they can show up at our door with no notice and at any time. Our holiday parties and family get togethers are always an event to look forward to.
The close knit quality of our family is something that sets it apart from others. We are very lucky to be part of such a loving and big family that genuinely enjoys spending time together. We feel like a lot of who we are stems from the people we have surrounding us, supporting and encouraging us. And for that we are grateful.
We can't say it is always easy though. Like any other family, we have our ups and downs. But we find that the best way to get through these rough patches is communication. We are still trying to understand how everyone in our family communicates - not everyone is the same. It's a work in progress, but we are still really lucky to have such a great family who's intention is to always put family first.
